| 21 May 2010 Symposium on marine spatial planning (MSP) Sheffield, UK | STEPPING INTO THE WATER: A NEW DOMAIN FOR SPATIAL PLANNING CALL FOR PAPERS: Papers are invited for a one-day symposium on the topic of marine spatial planning (MSP), to be held in Sheffield, UK, on 21st May 2010. The symposium will bring together academics and others involved in this emergent field, in the UK and other European countries, to present and discuss current work and to set directions for future research. MSP is emerging as a new approach to marine governance, as a response to growing pressures on the seas and increasing environmental damage, and reflecting growing territorialisation of the seas following developments in international maritime law. Although potential contributors are free to propose their own topics, the organisers may choose to focus on some of the following questions: What are the conceptual roots of MSP? How does MSP relate to contemporary notions of spatial planning? What type of planning do we need for the seas? How should marine space be conceptualised? What kind of participation is needed for MSP? What is to be learnt from emerging MSP practice? What are the prevailing interests at work in the shaping of marine plans? How should MSP and terrestrial planning relate to one another? Can planning for the land learn from planning for the sea? Contact Dr Stephen Jay |

Faced with a climate of increasing extremes with a greater need to manage water resources sustainably, to maintain and improve water quality, set against the projected increase of 252,000 new households a year in England (DCLG, 2009) - reveals the significant challenge that the spatial planning system faces when considering water management. This one day meeting will bring together a variety of stakeholders to explore the linkages and gain a deeper understanding of integrating water issues in spatial planning... Website |
| 13-15 December 2009 Ecocity World Summit 2009 Istanbul, Turkey |
The
Ecocity World Summit 2009 is organized by Yıldız Technical University,
Faculty of Architecture, Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Since the second half of the 20th century, degradation of global ecological balances led by environmental pollution due to the unconsciously overuse and consumption of the natural resources, has become a major problem. Clearly, most of the natural resources, being foundation stones of economic development and growth, are vulnerable assets and it is almost impossible to recuperate them. So, today, it is an obligation to apply the environmental socio-economic development policies in the context of sustainability. In other words, the sustainability and the existence of life on earth depend on the development of urgent global policies which are truly based on harmonious ecological and economic ethics. With these reasons, the theme of the Ecocity 2009 Conference, "Global Environmental Balances", focuses on finding new approaches towards a new ecologically oriented world order for future generations. Besides underlining the importance of eco-thinking, ethics, eco-politics and the methods to reach an ecological awareness, issues such as spatial planning policies and natural resource management, energy provision technologies, eco-architecture and design and environmentally friendly building materials will also be discussed by scientists, politicians and environment experts in the perspective of the third millennium. | 18-22 October 2009 Low Carbon Cities, 45th ISOCARP International Congress Porto, Portugal |
The 45th Isocarp Congress
explores the role of planning, and of all those involved in the
planning and development process, in the drive to achieve less resource
intensive, low carbon cities. The theme marks a logical progression
from that of last year’s event which addressed the reality and
consequences of urban sprawl. In sustainability terms those
unrestrained, land consuming patterns of growth are the opposite of
what we need to achieve and, encouragingly, speakers at that Congress
were able to point to numerous examples of schemes where planning has
been able to shape cities that are more respectful of the environment
in its widest sense. More Information |

Three
decades of research have established the field of complexity theories

of age, it is time to stop for a moment, look back at what has been
achieved, with appreciation, but also with sober criticism and then
look forward at potentials that have yet to be realized. As for
potentials yet to be realized this conference will explore the
implications of complexity theories of cities to planning and urban
design. |

| 23-25 August 2009 Inequality, Inclusion and the Sense of Belonging
Sao Paulo, Brasil |
Conference of the International Sociological Association - Research Committee 21 - Sociology of Urban and Regional Development Cities have experienced
considerable cultural, political and economic change during the past
few decades. The roles performed by social actors and by the state have
diversified rather than weakened, as was predicted by some in academic
debates. Spatial segregation has changed less than was forecast in the
literature but the social meaning of segregation varies depending upon
demographic and social structure. The idea of polarization remains
strong but it is now clear that this is too simple a concept to grasp
the diversity of urban situations. Nevertheless, inequality remains a
central feature of societies, although inequality is now more
fragmented, and more associated with specific groups. Class identities
have also changed, and in a broader sense, so too has the way people
understand their participation in society. Social inclusion remains a
key material, symbolic and political issue in a variety of national
situations, although also marked by local features in each case. In
countries where the issue of inclusion was considered to be resolved,
at least politically, some social groups have experienced a declining
sense of involvement in society, reposing the problem of social
belongingness. Social configurations have become significantly more
heterogeneous, combining local historical, spatial and political
factors with economic and political elements of broader amplitude. This
Conference intends to address these issues in a transdisciplinary way,
focusing mainly on their association with social inequalities and with
the identities that mark contemporary cities.
Submission deadline: 15th May 2009More information |
| 15-18 July 2009 AESOP 23d conference: Why can't the future be more like the past? Liverpool, Department of civic design |
in
the autumn of 1909 the first five students joined the new Department of
Civic Design. One hundred years later, we are delighted to be hosting
the annual AESOP (Association of European Schools of Planning)
Congress. We extend an invitation to colleagues from Europe, and
beyond, to join us in what will be a major international congress to
help celebrate our centenary. Chosen as European Capital of Culture in
2008, Liverpool has been the focus of numerous regeneration
initiatives. The city has and continues to change dramatically, and is
re-emerging as a renaissance city. For the city, 2008 marks an
important point in the journey, but the rebuilding of the city will
continue and 2009 is designated year of the environment in Liverpool.
The Congress will provide an excellent opportunity to see and reflect
upon the substantial progress that has been made in recent years, and
indeed the legacy of 2008.

| 7-8 May 2009 Empty country and Lively Cities : Spatial Differentiation in the Face of Demographic Change Berlin |
In
recent times, headlines like “Depopulation in Peripheral Regions”,
“Rural Areas: Old People´s Homes of Our Society?” or “Cities as Melting
Pots?” have been drawing attention to the demographic changes that are
now affecting all European countries. Demographic change and its
complex effects have been addressed for a number of years now as a
challenge to urban and regional studies. Shrinkage, ageing, and
diversification of the population are not evenly distributed in space –
cities and regions follow different development paths. Increasingly,
conditions of economic competitiveness, quality of life, ecological
carrying capacity, technical and social infrastructures, and
opportunities for political and societal participation differ between
cities and regions. Social and spatial inequalities are to be seen not
as exceptions to the rule but as the outcome of current demographic
changes and key elements in spatial development. Polarisation and
pluralisation possibly go hand in hand in urban and regional
development. |
| 1-3 April 2009 Unequal Places: Planning and Territorial Cohesion Newcastle University |
2009 UK-Ireland Planning Research Conference In 2009 the annual Planning Research Conference will be hosted by Newcastle University. The event will have the theme of Unequal Places, although, as is traditional, the conference invites papers on all aspects of planning research throughout the globe. With the theme, however, we hope to visit long-standing debates concerning in whose favour planning systems operate. We know more now of the inter-relationships between policy interventions in the fields of planning, environmental policy, education, health, design, infrastructure management etc. We know something of how resources and difficulties are unevenly distributed and how interventions can compound such problems and exacerbate concentrations of advantage and disadvantage. The concept of territorial cohesion is one way of accessing such concerns. |

| 9-12 February 2009 Small-scale Planning Conference for Young Academics Vienna University of Technology |
3rd AESOP YA Meeting The discipline of planning should be innately optimistic and forward-looking. Planning processes and practices are fundamentally oriented towards attempting to influence and shape the future by regulating and guiding the present. Planning is continually concerned with anticipating (future) trends and innovations in order to better predict (and shape) what the future might bring. Yet, paradoxically, planning is also strongly influenced by its past in a variety of ways... |

Venezuelan Alfredo Brillembourg and Austrian Hubert Klumpner. Their
working area is the informal city. ”The Informal City makes up 50% of
the main urban areas in the global south but has completely fallen
outside of the architectural and urbanistic attention. It demands and
produces another kind of urban design, whose process is the inverse of
the formal city.” (Crimson, ‘Facts on the Ground’, Harvard Design
Magazine, 2006)... |
| 23-25 November 2008 Capital Cities, Wicked Problems: Best Practices in Planning and Policy Response Mechanisms Sharjah |
Worldwide,
capital cities, and indeed mega cities, deal routinely with intractable
problems that are called ‘wicked problems.’ These problems are not
easily defined, have no obvious solutions, and attempts to solve them
will trigger or exacerbate other wicked problems. As cities grow, so do
the wicked problems, with which government and all urban stakeholders
must contend. Through presentations and discussions at its 10th Urban
Planning Symposium, Sharjah, the capital of the Sharjah Emirate, aims
to learn from, and share its own experiences with, planners and policy
makers from other parts of the world, about planning and policy
mechanisms that have proven to be effective in addressing wicked
problems. Papers should be prescriptive in terms of, first, the
specific mechanisms discussed, second, the political, legal, cultural,
technological, environmental and other implications of the mechanisms,
and, third, lessons for cities desiring to adopt or adapt the
mechanisms. |
| 13 & 20 November 2008 Lessons on European Spatial Planning, by Andreas Faludi Reims, France |
We
start with an overview of European integration in relation to spatial
planning. There are different planning models in Europe, in particular
the 'comprehensive integrated approach' and the 'regional economic
approach', the latter operating through state intervention aimed at
removing imbalances between regions. Many EU policies are designed to
reduce disparities, e.g. regional policy, and the policy to promote
Trans- European Networks (TENs). Could and, indeed, should, these
policies be co-ordinated with a view to their impact on spatial
development ? Or is such co-ordination rather a matter for the Member
States and/or their regional subdivisions ? ... |

| 9-11 October 2008 EURA 2008 Conference Milan, Italy |
European
cities are engaged in difficult and challenging processes of social,
economical, institutional and territorial change. Contemporary cities
can be considered as learning places under different points of view: - as central nodes of a knowledge based econom, - as social laboratories, places which expose continuously their citizens to the effects of social transformation, - as settings for institutional and political innovation. The EURA 2008 Conference in Milan (October 9-11, 2008) will focus its attention on the exploration of these major challenges and will foster a lively debate among researchers in the field of urban studies, particularly pointing at interactions among forms of knowledge and forms of urban governance. |

| 7-8 February 2008 Territorial Planning: Imaging, Anticipating and organising space Grenoble, France |
Territorial
planning is currently subject to a wide range of debates. Traditional
planning, focussing on statutory regulation of land use and on the
control of urban sprawl, is no longer adequate. Strategic planning,
which appeared more recently, is essentially focused on the economic
dimensions of urban development. Different questions are central for researchers and professionals. How to practice or organize urban territories? How to deal with different costs of planning, renewing and managing urban contemporary spaces? How to handle social and political conflicts? |
