Nordic Urban and Housing Research Seminar (NSBB)

Towards sustainability in urban transformation, governance cultures and housing policies

The NSBB network (Nordisk samarbeidsgruppe for by og boligforskning) was established in 1997. Its main activity is to hold annual Nordic seminars in urban and housing research, each Nordic country having a turn as a host.

With the theme “Urban Transformation, Governance Cultures and Housing Policies”, the seminar will tackle contemporary challenges to urban and housing research especially in the Nordic countries. The effort is to bring together research on socio-economic and physico-structural aspects of urban and regional transformation with research on changing urban governance cultures – drawing further implications to housing policy and planning.

The seminar is arranged by YTK – Centre for Urban and Regional Studies / Helsinki University of Technology

EURA 2008 Conference

European cities are engaged in difficult and challenging processes of social, economical, institutional and territorial change. Contemporary cities can be considered as learning places under different points of view:

  • as central nodes of a knowledge based econom,
  • as social laboratories, places which expose continuously their citizens to the effects of social transformation,
  • as settings for institutional and political innovation.

The EURA 2008 Conference in Milan (October 9-11, 2008) will focus its attention on the exploration of these major challenges and will foster a lively debate among researchers in the field of urban studies, particularly pointing at interactions among forms of knowledge and forms of urban governance.

We invite interested parties to submit one (and only one) abstract of 200-400 words

Capital Cities, Wicked Problems:Best Practices in Planning and Policy Response Mechanisms.

Worldwide, capital cities, and indeed mega cities, deal routinely with intractable problems that are called ‘wicked problems.’ These problems are not easily defined, have no obvious solutions, and attempts to solve them will trigger or exacerbate other wicked problems. As cities grow, so do the wicked problems, with which government and all urban stakeholders must contend. Through presentations and discussions at its 10th Urban Planning Symposium, Sharjah, the capital of the Sharjah Emirate, aims to learn from, and share its own experiences with, planners and policy makers from other parts of the world, about planning and policy mechanisms that have proven to be effective in addressing wicked problems. Papers should be prescriptive in terms of, first, the specific mechanisms discussed, second, the political, legal, cultural, technological, environmental and other implications of the mechanisms, and, third, lessons for cities desiring to adopt or adapt the mechanisms.

Evaluation in Planning
7th International Workshop

Towards methodological innovations in planning evaluation

Planning evaluation has a strong tradition of evaluating the success of local planning interventions. Despite enormous ingenuity, quantitative approaches have rarely been sufficient to identify the deadweight (BAU) scenario and the displacement, supply chain, multiplier and leakage effects when assessing scheme direct and indirect impacts. Inadequate data sets, poorly defined problems, poorly elaborated and or multiple objectives of planned interventions have added to the complexity in the evaluation research intelligence gathering exercise.

New demands have been placed on evaluation teams to identify the cost effectiveness of different solutions (individually, and in combination) and to provide evidence of how planned interventions work in different contexts to inform decisions on what policy actions to take. Planning evaluation has become an activity aimed at a multi-dimensional understanding of reality. We see as a crucial challenge here the need to understand how planning proposals are linked to their social, economic and environmental/ecological contexts.

European Cities and Capitals of Culture: Learning lessons from one another?

French and British Planning Study Group

The French and British Planning Studies Group, which has been in existence for 10 years, brings together academics and some practitioners on both sides of the Channel who have an interest in Franco-British comparative study.  Presentations and participant interventions may be made in either French or English, as individuals prefer. Interpretation is not provided. Meetings are held twice a year and alternate between France and Britain; the practice has been to identify a theme which may be studied in both French and British contexts.  Papers are invited from both members of the Group and from outside experts in the chosen theme.

Territorial Planning:
Imaging, Anticipating and organising space

Territorial planning is currently subject to a wide range of debates. Traditional planning, focussing on statutory regulation of land use and on the control of urban sprawl, is no longer adequate. Strategic planning, which appeared more recently, is essentially focused on the economic dimensions of urban development.

Different questions are central for researchers and professionals. How to practice or organize urban territories? How to deal with different costs of planning, renewing and managing urban contemporary spaces? How to handle social and political confl icts?

AESOP SUMMER ACTIVITIES- Congress, PhD Workshop and Post Congress conference

AESOP promotes and disseminates the development of teaching curricula and research within the member schools through the Annual Congress where members share their research and best practice in spatial planning. Staff, research students and practitioners make presentations and discuss papers on European, national, regional and local spatial planning issues, as well as debates on planning curricula.
A recent development has been a Congress track devoted to issues of housing and social exclusion.
A three-day Ph.D workshop precedes the Congress.
Congresses also include local study visits, business-meetings and meetings of special interest groups.

AESOP Ph.D. Workshop 2006

For mor information, please visit the YA website:

www.aesop-youngacademics.net

The local organising committee have created an AESOP PhD workshop which will enable PhD students from across Europe (and the USA, South Africa, South America, etc) to share their research ideas, findings, and concerns with each other in an informal atmosphere. Five internationally famous mentors will act as facilitators to guide the presentations and critical reflection by the students and to encourage discussion on major planning themes and theory. The programme presented in this document has built on the success of the Vienna (2005) and Amsterdam (2003) AESOP workshops, as well as addressing key issues raised in the evaluation reports of recent workshops.  The themes below will be included in the briefing note for the mentors, will form part of the plenary round-table panel discussion, and will be addressed by the evening plenary speakers:

  • How to develop, use and apply theory in planning research.
  • How to overcome the ‘blocks’: for example designing a research strategy that will work.
  • Developing a research career: for example publishing.
  • Particular topics of interest raised by the participating PhD students.
